Combat's Lady Virus VIRSP3 Bat Added to ASA's Non Approved List

The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA), the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, announced that the softball bat model VIRSP3 Lady Virus manufactured by the CE Composites, Inc. (DBA Combat) is no longer authorized for use in ASA Championship Play.

Other governing bodies that currently use ASA’s bat performance standards such as the NCAA, NFHS, NAIA, NJCAA will continue to use the ASA’s non approved bat list and restrict such bats in 2008 and beyond.

“We are disappointed with the situation but understand that our contract with the ASA requires a bat to be placed on the ASA Non Approved list after it fails consecutive compliance tests”, said Steven Sutherland, President of CE Composites. “We acknowledge full responsibility for this situation. Please visit our website, www.combatsoftball.com, to learn more about our efforts to deal with this situation.”

ASA conducts random audit testing of various approved models throughout each calendar year to verify that the manufacturers’ bat models comply with the standards currently in effect. It was through this auditing process, that it was discovered that the VIRSP3 Lady Virus failed to comply with the ASA Bat Performance Standard.

The ASA will continue to audit bats on an on-going basis to verify compliance.

In order to gain initial certification and have the right to use the ASA 2004 bat certification mark, bat manufacturers send production samples to independent ASA approved testing labs. Once the sample bat passes the performance test at one of the independent labs, the manufacturer has the authority to apply the ASA 2004 bat certification mark indicating compliance with the current standard. It is the responsibility of the bat manufacturer to ensure that every unit of each model produced passes the test at any point during the lifespan of the bat.

ASA Announces New Affordable Discount Benefit Plan for Members and their Families

Oklahoma City, OK—The Amateur Softball Association of America, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, has announced the availability of a new custom designed affordable discount benefit program to members, players and families.  The program is called Dental Solutions.

Long known for promoting the interests of softball players, ASA has reacted to a recent challenge to find member related benefits that can be utilized by ASA’s vast population.  “As a sport, softball tends to be very family oriented.  Many of our members do not have access to the big discounts afforded to those who work for large companies and we feel this program can be beneficial to them”, says ASA executive director Ron Radigonda.

The ASA leveraged their very large member pool of several million participants to gain advantages in several health related areas including Dental, Rx, Chiropractic, Hearing and Vision discounts.  The Dental Solutions program meets this need head on with access to a large network of providers who have agreed to perform their professional services at a significant discount from what the member would have paid without the program plus making it very affordable!

The cost of members joining the plan is $7.95/month for a single and $12.45/month for a family.

ASA players and families simply need to click here (http://www.denexvalue.com/ASA/amateur_softball_association2.htm) to obtain all program information, including access to the listing of all providers and enrollment information.

A message from Ron Rodigonda, ASA Executive Director

ASA Members,

This is a reminder that ASA has been asked by RISE Magazine, a SchoolSports, Inc. publication, to assist in the selection of the Gatorade Player of the Year (POY) Program state and national award-winners for softball. The staff at RISE Magazine has been looking for input from all local ASA associations regarding the top female fast pitch softball players in their state and at this point has only received about two-dozen recommendations in total from ASA membership including some states with multiple nominations. RISE Magazine will accept any and all nominations from local, regional and state level ASA members and coaches.

The ASA is the new source for the selections by RISE Magazine and has been designated as the Gatorade Player of the Year Sports-Specific Chair for softball, a title that will appear on Gatorade's Player of the Year web page as well as RISE Magazine's web page.

RISE Magazine is aware that the ASA has no formal association with high school softball on a local or national level, but, in accordance with POY criteria, will consider for Gatorade Player of the Year honors only those ASA players who are still playing high school softball. Since RISE must provide Gatorade with its final list of 50 states (and the District of Columbia) winners by 05/15/07 and the national winner during the week of 05/28/07. The original deadline of March 19, 2007 has been extended so please get your nominations sent in ASAP.

This is a great way to continue to promote the ASA Junior Olympic Program as the top program in the country and increases the likelihood that the Gatorade Player of the Year winner for softball in all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be ASA players.

Please e-mail all available information regarding nominees to Chad Konecky chad@risemag.com.

RISE is expecting ASA members and coaches to be proactive about nominating talent.

Thanks in advance for your help with this very important project.

Best Regards,

Ron Radigonda

A MESSAGE FROM ARIZONA ASA STATE COMMISSIONER DON FISHEL

In January of 2007, I was appointed Arizona ASA State Commissioner. I am very honored to serve the fine State of Arizona. I am proud to be a "native" of Arizona. I have been actively involved in the ASA program since 1984. During the past 20+ years, I have at one time or another served as a field maintenance crew member, a scorer/announcer, a player, a volunteer girl's fast-pitch coach, a league board member, a league coordinator, an umpire, a tournament director, and Vice-President of Arizona ASA. Throughout, I have remained true & loyal to the ASA Association.

For the 2007 season of play, I hope to see the merger of Phoenix ASA and Arizona ASA be a productive one. With dedication, committment, and a sincere love and passion for our chosen sport, join me in doing our very best to unify the State of Arizona.
